A 280 kilometer drive from Bangalore, Mullayanagiri is a peak located in
Chikmagalur, Karnataka. Being the highest peak in Karnataka, it offers larger
than life views and the some very interesting trails (includes ridge hiking).
We start from Bangalore on Friday night and reach our campsite between 5 and 6
AM on saturday morning. At about 8 AM after freshening up, and a quick
breakfast, we will proceed to the trailhead, a short drive away. A quick
introduction and briefing and we enter the trailhead off the ghat-road known as
Sarpadhari that leads to the Mullayanagiri peak. This stretch is fairly steep
(almost 60 degrees) and first passes through brush and low trees until it turns
right alongside a ravine on the right. The trail can be very slippery in the
monsoons. We keep climbing uphill with very brief breaks in between. The trail
snakes along the side of the mountain until we reach the black cliffs of
Mullayanagiri
and pass through an opening between them. From here, the trail starts to relent
as we pass through a small field of short flowering shrubs. Here on, we hit the
last and final stretch to the Mullayanagiri peak. The incline gradually
increases once again until we see the temple flag at the peak. About 15 minutes
of steady plodding and we will have reached the Mullayanagiri peak. The place is
extremely silent and still, almost meditative - a perfect spot for the temple to
exist.
After a short rest, and a visit to the temple for those that are interested, we
descend the peak and head toward the Bababudangiri peaks. The trail goes over
rolling hills, with hill grassland and stretches of shola forests on either
side, all of which make for some very breathtaking scenery (the incline is quite
gentle apart from a couple of very steep, risky descents). Approximately 2 hours
later we reach the forest check post at Gundi where we stop for a quick lunch.
We then re-enter the trail to hit the more exhilarating part of the entire trek.
This stretch involves hiking along the lofty and steep rocky ridges of
Bababudangiri. With a cliff on one side and a steep hillside on the other, it
literally feels like ‘walking along a knife's edge'!
With the telephone tower visible in the distance as our pointer, we leave the
ridges and proceed towards one final incline that continues between towards the
next stretch of rolling hills, grassland. About 2 hours after crossing the
ridges, we reach the telephone tower - the final peak in the bababudangiri
range. A 20 minute hike downhill from here and we reach the staircase to a
waterfall. After spending some time recovering and reveling in our
accomplishment, we drive back to our campsite for a well deserved dinner and
rest.
We will wake at 6AM the next morning to freshen up, followed by breakfast. We
leave the campsite to take a dip at the Dabdabbe falls. After spending about an
hour here, we will start on our way back to reach Bangalore by 9 PM.
Among the many treks we organize, this trek provides a very unique challenge,
and is among our personal favorites.
NOTE:
- Carry a raincoat. The weather here is volatile and can change drastically on
