Two Day trek to Kumara Parvata - [28th - 29th January 2017]- Registration is ON
you aren’t very new to the world of trekking then you would have heard the name
Kumara Parvata being mentioned often. Considered among the toughest treks in
South India, It is a perfect mix of physical challenge and natural beauty of the
Pushpagiri Wildlife sanctuary.
We start from Bangalore on Friday night and reach Subramanya between 5 and 6 AM on saturday morning. At about 7.30 AM after freshening up, and a quick breakfast, we will proceed to the trailhead, a quarter kilometre long walk away from the Kukke Subramanya temple. A quick introduction and briefing and we begin the first phase of our trek to Bhattara Mane. The trail is a well trod one, and continues for a good 7 kilometers uphill, through thick jungle (Expect leeches in the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons). You know that you're nearing Bhattara mane when the jungle starts growing thinner and the incline becomes less demanding. The trail eventually opens out onto hilly grassland. On an average, this first stretch takes about 3-4 hours to cover.
On reaching Bhattara mane, we will have a quick lunch, a brief rest and then we begin the second stage of the trek (Destination: The Kumara Parvatha Peak). From Bhattara mane, we rejoin the trail and proceed to the first viewpoint. A few minutes to stand in awe (and to click a few pictures) of the majesty of the mountain you are about to conquer and we hit the trail to the Forest Department to finish any formalities. After passing Viewpoint 2, the incline of the trail begins to increase gradually until it remains at a constant angle of about 45-55 degrees with hilly grassland. After about an hour, you will reach the Mantapa, an ancient black stone structure where we will have our first major respite.
The trek here onwards involves unrelenting inclines with a series of false peaks which will trick you into thinking you are almost on top of Sesha Parvata (The first main peak before Kumara Parvata). On reaching Sesha Parvata, we will regroup and proceed towards Kumara Parvata. We descend Sesha parvata into another jungle, very different (Shorter but dense vegetation) from the first one near Kukke Subramanya. This stretch traverses along a saddle formed between Sesha Parvata and Kumara Parvata. Traces of wildlife (bisons, etc.) having passed through this stretch can often be noticed. The final patch will require you to scramble up steep sections of boulders and rock faces until it levels out onto flat ground - a sign that you have reached the summit of Kumara Parvata. With low clouds and absolute silence, the feel of the place is simply divine. After resting at the peak for a while, we will start descending by 3 PM with the intention of reaching Bhattara mane before dark and before cloud cover sets in - Two natural hazards that we want to completely avoid. We will reach Bhattara mane in time for dinner and a blissful night’s rest.
After an early breakfast, we will begin descending by 8AM into the jungle back to Kukke Subramanya, from where by noon, we will start for Bangalore.
Overall Kumara Parvata makes for an amazing trekking experience and should be on your ‘to-do-treks’ list if you intend to take up trekking seriously.
Kumara Parvata is the third tallest peak in Karnataka, Mullayanagiri in Chikmagalur being the tallest and Thadiyandamol in Coorg being the second tallest.
